Plan an OBD test in Texas before your California leg

A carrier based in another state can plan an OBD Clean Truck Check stop while its truck passes through Texas. Our certified technician performs the OBD test. Dispatch can coordinate remotely; the vehicle must reach the agreed testing location. Choose a stop that fits the existing route instead of diverting to an unconfirmed appointment.

CARB’s current guidance still covers subject trucks registered outside California when they operate in California. Texas registration alone does not remove the requirement. Review the official out-of-state vehicle FAQ and the vehicle record before assigning the load.

First: is the truck eligible for our OBD service?

Clean Truck Check generally applies to diesel and alternative-fuel heavy-duty vehicles over 14,000 pounds GVWR operating on California public roads. Exclusions matter: out-of-state motorhomes and zero-emission vehicles are among the categories excluded. The program is not a general requirement for every vehicle traveling in Texas.

Use the CARB overview and exclusions, then check the VIN’s deadline in CTC-VIS. Our service is OBD-only: diesel engines 2013 and newer and alternative-fuel engines 2018 and newer. We do not offer smoke opacity or non-OBD inspections. An older engine may require another testing provider. A DOT inspection or ordinary diagnostic scan does not replace the required emissions test.

Time the test against the vehicle’s deadline

CARB allows passing test results to be submitted up to 90 days before the compliance deadline. Use the due date in CTC-VIS to choose a Texas appointment within that window; a test taken too early may not satisfy the upcoming requirement. Leave time for repairs or an OBD readiness issue before the California leg.

See the official testing-window guidance. The state deadline and your travel date are different planning dates; include both in the dispatch brief.

San Antonio

Relevant to I-10 and I-35 trips. Core-area mobile coverage has no travel surcharge. Agree on the actual yard, terminal or accessible stopping point; this service-area page is not a walk-in address.

Austin area

Relevant to a truck already using the I-35 corridor. The same per-truck rates apply here as in San Antonio, with no travel surcharge within our service area. Choose the stop that fits your existing route.

Austin OBD service details

Put these details in the dispatch plan

  1. Vehicle: VIN, fuel type and engine model year, with OBD eligibility confirmed.
  2. Deadline: the due date in CTC-VIS and the planned California entry date.
  3. Stop: exact Texas location, safe truck access and permission to test.
  4. Timing: local date/time, arrival window and on-site contact.
  5. Quote: tested truck count, applicable rate and a location within our service area. Retests are free in that area.
  6. Contingency: what dispatch will do if the vehicle needs repairs or cannot complete a passing test.

TEXAS STOP / CALIFORNIA REQUIREMENTS

Keep the truck moving.
Start with the details.

Gather the VIN, engine information, and current testing deadline. A confirmed appointment and safe stopping location belong in the dispatch plan before the truck changes course.

Understand the required test

Before the driver leaves the testing stop

Obtain the test record and verify the submitted result for the correct VIN. For OBD testing, CARB directs testers to check that results appear in CTC-VIS before releasing the vehicle. If the result is absent, ask the tester to investigate the submission instead of treating the appointment receipt as proof. See the official result guidance.

Retests are free within our working service area. Arrange repairs separately if needed, then contact us for the return appointment. The owner also needs to resolve vehicle reporting, annual payments and outstanding requirements. A Texas test visit is one part of compliance, not an automatic clearance for every California operating rule.

Questions from interstate drivers

Do I need to search from Texas to arrange a visit?

No. Plan using where the truck will be, even if the dispatcher or driver is currently elsewhere.

Can I send the VIN and get a remote test?

A VIN helps organize an appointment; it does not replace the physical attended inspection. This site describes a truck-side testing visit.

Should I clear fault codes before the appointment?

No. Recent code clearing can leave OBD readiness incomplete. Discuss recent repairs and readiness with the operator before changing the route.

Give the driver an agreed stop.

Review OBD eligibility and preparation and the total-price conditions, then arrange the location and arrival window.
