Connected device / Remote OBD testing

Keep your testing connected to your truck.

California-bound trucks do not always return to San Antonio or Austin before their next Clean Truck Check deadline. Ask Clean Truck Check Texas about remote OBD testing with a continuously connected device: emissions data is collected from the truck and submitted through the required CARB process, without arranging a technician visit for each test.

Start with your VIN, engine model year, fuel type and operating locations. We will review the setup with you before you choose a device or service.

How remote Clean Truck Check works

1. Match the truck and device

Confirm the engine year, fuel type, diagnostic connector and existing ELD or GPS equipment. The setup uses a CARB-certified continuously connected OBD device. A generic scanner or an ordinary ELD does not automatically qualify.

2. Connect and set up testing

The device connects to the truck’s diagnostic port and reads emissions information from the engine computer. Correct cables, vehicle identification and a working data connection matter. Follow the instructions for the supplied device; tell us if another device already uses the port.

3. Collect and submit the test

The connected platform supports scheduled and on-demand testing. The truck must meet the device’s operating conditions for a valid capture; testing is not simply a scan performed while driving. The approved device vendor transmits the required OBD data to CARB.

4. Check the official result

Review the correct VIN and test result in CTC-VIS. A portal status or submission message is useful for tracking activity, but a completed submission is not a guaranteed passing result.

Is your truck eligible for remote OBD testing?

CARB’s OBD testing groups include diesel engines from model year 2013 onward and alternative-fuel engines from 2018 onward. Use the engine’s emissions control label, not only the truck’s registration year. Device compatibility still needs to be checked for the individual vehicle.

Our offering is OBD-only. It does not replace smoke opacity testing or non-OBD visual inspections for older engines. Review CARB’s testing requirements and the certified OBD device information.

A connected device cannot repair an emissions problem

Resolve active emissions-related faults before testing. After repairs, cleared codes or a disconnected battery, the OBD system may need normal operation to complete its readiness checks. Several trips over a few days may be needed; the vehicle’s actual readiness determines when to retest.

The owner must also add the truck to CTC-VIS, pay the annual state program fee and meet outstanding account requirements. Device testing and the state fee are separate. Follow CARB’s readiness guidance rather than clearing codes to try to obtain a pass.

Remote setup or a local mobile appointment?

Choose a connected setup when recurring testing needs to fit trucks operating away from the same yard. If the truck is already in our Texas service area and you need an attended appointment, our certified technician provides mobile OBD testing in San Antonio and Austin. Local retests are free within our working service area.

Remote device terms are separate from local mobile testing rates. Request the device and service details for your truck count and operating locations before deciding.

Remote testing questions

Does remote testing mean sending you only my VIN?

No. A compatible approved device must connect to the actual truck. The VIN identifies the vehicle; it does not provide the emissions data needed for the test.

Can I keep my existing ELD?

Send the ELD model and diagnostic-port details. The cable arrangement and compatibility must be reviewed before installation; do not disconnect required logging equipment to improvise the connection.

Does the device guarantee a passing test?

No. Emissions faults, incomplete readiness or connection issues can prevent a successful test. Check the actual CARB result and resolve the reported issue before retesting.

Can I use it while operating outside Texas?

A connected setup can collect vehicle data away from a local testing appointment when the supported device and data connection are available. Tell us the states and countries where your truck operates so we can confirm the proposed service coverage.

Find the right remote setup for your truck.

Send the VIN, engine model year, fuel type, truck count, operating locations and any existing ELD details. Ask about the device, setup, testing workflow and service terms.
